William Boateng, Director of Communication at the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), has announced plans to replace over 1 million outdated meters. This move comes despite ongoing customer complaints about meter issues.
According to Boateng, every electrical gadget has a lifespan, and meters are no exception. He explained that some meters have reached the end of their lifespan and need to be replaced to ensure proper functionality and efficiency.
The replacement exercise is part of ECG’s digitalization efforts, aimed at making it easier for customers to purchase credit and access electricity services through a mobile app. Boateng noted that the new meters will be simple to use and will protect customer records and information, which have been compromised in the past.
Addressing customer complaints, Boateng acknowledged issues with meters not communicating properly, leading to incorrect readings and deductions. Some customers have even accused ECG of stealing from them due to these issues. However, Boateng clarified that this is not the case, explaining that the meters may not be deducting credits properly, but this is a technical issue, not theft.
Boateng assured customers that the replacement exercise will resolve these issues and improve overall service delivery. He pleaded with customers to comply with the replacement exercise, stating that it is necessary for the success of ECG’s digitalization efforts. He assured customers that the new meters will be more efficient and user-friendly…..
